For the 9th consecutive year the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems at the Ulster University, Magee Campus, Derry/Londonderry will be running two 2 day workshops on Tuesday 23rd & Wednesday 24th January 2018 for up to 80 students.

This is a great opportunity for Year 13 pupils and will give them an insight into the courses that Ulster University have to offer. Most importantly it will help the students decide if this is the right Career path for them.

    November Class Programme

    THORNHILL COLLEGE AT SEAGATE

      

    Year 10 students from Thornhill College visited Seagate as part of their STEM studies.  As you can see, as well as getting hands on, they managed to have some fun!


    BUBBLEBUM AT ST. COLUMB'S COLLEGE

    The use of IT in the working day was examined by students in St. Columb's College.  Bubblebum shared their expertise in how they work nationally and globally with forrmer student and Social Media expert.

     

     

    AIRPORTER AT LISNEAL COLLEGE

    Lisneal College, Leisure and Tourism students received an expert insight into working with the industry from Director of Airporter and Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce, Jennifer McKeever.  Jennifer spent time in the classroom with students answering questions and sharing her insights.

     

     

    ST. MARY'S COLLEGE FOCUS ON COMPUTING

    Students were visited in the classroom by two of our leading IT companies, Allstate and InVision.  Students heard about job roles in IT and how they can use their studies to pursue them.

     Engineering students from Foyle College travelled to Ballymena to see engineering and manufacturing by one of Northern Ireland's leading companies.

     Balloons as atoms was the subject at Seagate for Year 10 students.  Thanks to staff at Seagate for an insightful visit!


     LISNEAL COLLEGE AT THE NI FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

    Students were provided with an insight into life as a firefighter on a visit to the Cresent Link Fire Station.  Whilst there, they witnessed an emergency call and saw how the Emergency Service responded instantly!  Above they witness the result of putting a small amount of water on hot oil.

    ST. CECILIA'S COLLEGE - ENTREPRENEUR WEEK 2017

     ARGENTO FOUNDER LAUNCHES ENTREPRENEUR WEEK

     

    Entrepreneur Week at St. Cecilia's College was lauched by one of Northern Ireland's finest examples of entrepreneurship, and a local to top it all off!  Argento founder, Pete Boyle joined students from Lisneal College, St. Joseph's Boys School, St. Columb's College and St. Mary's College at St. Cecilia's College to share his experiences and expertise.

     


     

    Students from St. Columb's College, Lisneal College, St. Joseph's Boys School, and St. Mary's College listened as they learned that entrepreneurship can lead to success for any of them. 

    Despite Storm Ophelia playing havoc with our school timetables, Entrepreneur Week carried on with amazing insights and outlines of entrepreneurship, supporting our curriculum and inspiring our students.

    It was a great opportunity for students looking at Business and Charities to meet founder of Children of the Crossfire, Richard Moore.  

     

    LISNEAL COLLEGE AT FLEMING AGRI-PRODUCTS

    Engineering students at Lisneal College focused their attention on Fleming Agri-Products and got insight into job roles at a manufacturing site exporting all over the world.

     

    SEAGATE BRING RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION TO ST. MARY'S COLLEGE

      

    Seagate brought expertise and insight from their recruitment process to Year 12 St. Mary's College students.  Girls gathered information to help with studies in Learning and Life and Work.

     

    ADA LOVELACE DAY

    Ada Lovelace is seen as the first computer coder, and each year she is celebrated through females taking part in STEM activities.

    Business Studies students learned about Customer Service at Sainsbury's.

     

    St. COLUMB'S COLLEGE VISIT TO ASDA

       

    Business Studies students visited ASDA to look at how the store manages Customer Service.  

     

    BANK OF IRELAND VISIT TO OAKGROVE COLLEGE

     

    Students learned about how to budget and the importance of saving with Bank of Ireland.

     

    ST. COLUMB'S COLLEGE AT THE NI FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE

         

     Mayor in conversation with students Deputy Mayor introductions 

    It was an exciting day with the NI Fire and Rescue Service for students from St. Columb's College who were joined by the Deputy Mayor to launch The Insight Programme for schools.  The programme will see over 200 students get hands on and face to face with roles within the fire and rescue service.

    ST. MARY'S COLLEGE AT THE BEECH HILL COUNTRY HOUSE

    Students from St. Mary's College spent a week visiting organisations with a Geography focus.  The first of the visits was to the Beech Hill Hotel where students looked at the history and context of the grand house through the eyes of the original Planters.

    The Foyle Port provided a look at how important importing and exporting are.  Students learned about the important role played by the Port both historically and now. The port handles approximately 2 tonnes of cargo per annum and the value of trade passing through the regional gateway is estimated to be £1 billion.

    At Coolkeeragh ESB students learned about the importance of the River Foyle in helping to generate electricity.  They also looked at the local ecology and environmental factors.

    Students joined the staff of Niche Drinks in Health and Safety clothing to see for themselves why the company rely so heavily on local produce and how global changes can have an impact on company operations.

    Students from Holy Cross College spent time with firefighters at the NIFRS getting an insight into the important job that the NIFRS do.  They even met a female firefighter!  Who said women can’t do it!

    Students currently on exchange with St. Columb’s College visited Seagate.  They learned about sustainability within the industry and gained an insight into the company to take back to Germany.

     

    March Events Programme

    ENGINEERING WEEK

    Engineering Week brought opportunity for students to engage with employers and learn about entry into the sector.

    Students visited the Engineering Department at LYIT and learned about courses on offer and entry requirements.

    Employers took part in a speed networking event giving students the opportunity to speak to a range of different engineering companies and engineers. Companies taking part were:

    Students visited E+I Engineering.  E+I Engineering Ltd. was founded in 1986.  Since 2004, the company headquarters have been located in Co. Donegal, Ireland. The 150,000 sq ft facility was purpose built to house both the switchgear and Powerbar production lines.  Students had a tour of the company and met with employees.

    LOTTIE ACCOMPANIES STUDENTS

    As a former participant in Entrepreneur Week, Lottie joined students to promote Women in Engineering.  Have a look at some of her exploits throughout the week.  Lottie travelled to space with Tim Peake in 2016 and has taken part in various STEM based activities.  Lottie has been championed by the Women in Engineering Society as a positive role model.

    Engineers Ireland sponsored a stage show on engineering all over the world.  Students from Thornhill College also attended the show.

    January Work Experience Programme

    For the 8th consecutive year the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems - Faculty of Computing and Engineering at the Ulster University, Magee Campus, Derry/Londonderry ran a 2 day Workshop for 44 students.

    Year 13 students from St. Columb's College were out on Work Experience this month exploring the world of work. They took every opportunity to find out more about the businesses they were with and the work involved to make sure it's the right career path for them. This will go a long way helping the students with their UCAS Applications next year.

     17 students got a great insight into the work that Seagate do. They offered placements within 7 departments: Science & Engineering, ICT, Manufacturing Execution Systems, HR, Environmental Health & Safety, Productions and Equipment Support Group.

    TECHNOLOGY INVESTIGATION AT SEAGATE

    Technology students from St. Columb’s College looked at the advances in modern technology at Seagate and the levels of protection that prevent humans from damaging the product.  It was fun!

    ST PATRICK’S DUNGIVEN AT THE NIFRS

    Students got ‘hands on’ at the NIFRS learning about fire and rescue with the crew at Crescent Link.  As part of the Insight Programme, students learned about life as a firefighter and the challenges faced by these local heroes.

    LOTTIE ENHANCES BUSINESS STUDIES UNDERSTANDING AT ST. COLUMB’S COLLEGE

    Students at St. Columb’s College were joined by Lottie’s founder to look at how a business achieves and maintains success globally.  Lottie, an 18cm doll who is a global success, is an example of a local product that is taking on the toy market across the world.  Lottie is an award winning product, with some exciting ventures coming up.  She has already been to space with Tim Peake and is currently present at a Mars simulation in Utah!

    BUSINESS APPLICATION AT SEAGATE

    Business Studies students from Lisneal College looked at quality management at Seagate and learned about the processes that exist to ensure that the product remains at the centre of global technological success.

    Well done to Lynne Gardiner and students on gaining the top 1, 2, 3 A Level Business Studies results in 2016.  Quite an achievement!


     

    ARDNASHEE COLLEGE ENHANCE HOSPITALITY SKILLS

    Ardnashee College worked with Bishop’s Gate Hotel on developing their hospitality skills.  Students were shown first class skills in laying a table and dealing with customers, and were treated to a hotel tour that introduced them to the history and luxury of Bishop’s Gate Hotel.
